Business + Marketing > Promoting My Site Help! http://www.governingdynamo.com
Hi Adam, while I am definitely not the pro around here on the subject of modern day web promotion -- maybe some SEO suggest may help? There's tons of info you search typing SEO into the search of this forum (pay close attention to Bonnie's posts btw).
Some recent remarks on that subject here:

As to gaining more audience and creating viewer participation - I personally default to the "old school" of thought (which still works in my opinion!) --- and that is: interact with other blogs and sites on your specific topic - when you comment and track back to others blogs, sites, forum - this supports a more community oriented feel - plus you include your own link in your participations as well. Other things you can do of course include featuring content from others, running some type of promotion, include a "cause" that others would support.
Some years ago I created a website that developed into over 450 pages. I had ZERO clue how to do a site - it took me about 90 days to figure out what html was. BUT: I was writing on a subject that I loved - and at the time was less mainstream than it is today --- and iincluded LOTS OF interesting content (daily) - texts - related materials --- interacted with others - figured out how to tie in a forum - and I ended up with a pretty good size community and having a 9 out of 10 ranking on google. Other opportunities arose because of it. Today it would probly be near impossible to be 9/10 rank on google -- but at the time it was still doable. In any case - what I learned from the experience are these 3 main things:
1) Content works. Specially if its informed, inclusive, and consistent.
2) Community works. Because it creates a sense of camaraderie. I had at least 3 well known authors contact me because of reviews given on their work (and credit given to them of course and included links to them etc) --- and what happened was two of them ended up paying me monthly to continue writing somewhat of a "column" based on their research....
3) Authenticity (and passion) works. If you are excited about your subject and post regularly- others will also be engaged because authenticity comes through the writing
.
Anyway --- hth and many best wishes,
Thanks for taking the time to help some good adviced offered, it is much apprecited.
Regards: Adam
Adam,
Social networking for business is huge. So you're on the right track with that. You need to be careful though because it isn't meant to be a sales page. Include as much information as possible in your profile. Favorite books, movies, etc. and be social. Jump into conversations offer some advice or experiences become an attractive marketer. People will follow.
Then again if you go about it wrong they will unfollow just as fast. You know Twitter is the hottest social network as of late. I was just today checking their ranking and they sit at #15. That is a jump from 57 on May 3. YouTube #3 and facebook #4..
There are other ways of building traffic. As Sib mentioned above content. Content is king. Write content that addresses a pain or concern and provide a solution. And write as if you are talking to your visitors over coffee. If your content sounds like it came from an encyclopedia rewrite it.
There are plenty of free sites that you can use to get content online such as: e-zinearticles.com ( which is awesome), Squidoo and Hub Pages. Again fill out your profile as mentioned earlier. What you want to do is build a web of content which brings me to the next step and that is linking your content. Linking content is critical. Here is a great page about value exchange there is a free e-book on building links and they won't even ask for an e-mail address. Make Your Links Work
Of course you need to know about SEO and keyword usage. Wordtracker is the best resource for keyword research and they will provide you with profitable keywords to get found by the search engines. They are a little pricey though.
It boils down to:
-keyword focused content pages
-social networking
-web of content
-good link exchange program
-post to related blogs or forums
-be a solutions provider
-keep writing more content and link your content
Here's another freebie. This is a great research tool that you may find useful. Search It
