Features + System > plans for ftp?
There are no plans to support FTP -- which is a very old protocol. You can use the "auto-decompress zip" feature to decompress multiple files at once, right?
Hi. I'm wondering if others find the act of decompressing to hurt the quality of their photos. When I post directly from Flickr and let Flickr resize the image it is so crisp. When I let SQ do it, it's pretty soft - almost fuzzy. I can't upload one at time. This could be a blocker for me.
Ideas? Thanks,
Angela
When you are zipping files to upload a batch at once, it is a lossless compression technique. This will not affect image quality. Check the settings you are using when saving the jpeg/gif images. Also, don't forget to set the image resolution to 72dpi before uploading to SQ. If SQ resamples an image that is deemed too high resolution, it could affect the quality since the jpeg compression could be set to high at SQ's end.
Is there anyway to select multiple files and move them to another directory? That is the only thing that frustrates me about the file management system with SS. Am I missing something?
While FTP is an old protocol, it's still the standard protocol for communicating with web hosts everywhere. The lack of FTP support (while not a deal killer) is still a headache at times.
I maintain an number of sites where I'm uploading photographs by the hundreds. FTP would make this sooo much easier.
The decompress zip feature is helpful, but it restricts you to 100 files per zip. In my case, I need to load my image galleries in order (i.e. a wedding gallery), so I need to create a number of zips that each have 100 files, then load those zips in order. I can get it done, but it's not a very efficient way to load. If I screw up and load them out of order, there still isn't a way to rearrange photo ordering or multi-delete files easily. (I realize these are two separate feature requests, but to me and my business, they are related).
When I"m loading 5 to 20 files at a time, I also find it frustrating that there is no multi-select. That seems like a pretty common upload interface, so I'm surprised SS hasn't included that yet.
Another vote for FTP. HTTP is a very old protocol too, but that doesn't make it less useful :)
I love SquareSpace, but managing files is awkward and would be so much easier with FTP.
Thanks for listening!
Another vote for FTP here! I'm new to Squarespace and I'm very surprised that there isn't an FTP option. I have a problem with the editor not recognising changes in images I upload with the same name, which has lead me to upload lots of similarly named duplicates as a temporary workaround. I would prefer to just do all my uploading in a simple client.
HTTP is useful, but I don't see the reason not to allow FTP access.
Definitely another vote for FTP
Consider this another vote for FTP and for batch moving/deleting in the file manager. People with small numbers of files and generally small sites, can still do everything they need using a system designed for people with large amounts of files, and larger sites. The reverse is not so true.....
I agree. I want to upload pdf's in separate directories that are only visible to users with certain priviledges. I need to upload several hundred pdf's and keep them synchronized (ideally) with my mac. Uploading as it is now is inconvenient: a better batch upload or FTP would be very useful.
You should really add FTP it makes life so much easier for multiple files. Plus when you have ftp you don't need to add any more features to SQ. FTP is as old as HTTP it is fine to use and is the standard for web server access. Also there should be an advanced option for SQ to not resample an image that is deemed too high resolution, that makes uploading print images a pain.
Just in case all the votes and requests here for FTP are not enough to sway the decision, here's another:
In the last 3 months I have had 3 clients who asked my advice about hosting with SquareSpace or hosting with GoDaddy. I told them the lack of domain email was a problem with SquareSpace but the WYSIWYG was an asset. The killer for SquareSpace? No ftp. Some clients WANT ftp for file uploads, and those who don't are swayed by the fact that they will pay me for a lot more time to use the cumbersome SS system instead of the lightning-fast ftp process.
You lost at least 3 clients (good ones!) recently over just this issue.
andersson - In regards to Squarespace not having domain email like GoDaddy - Hosting companies email solutions are usually terrible solutions (IMHO and experience). On any domain I own and use email on, I immediately setup Google Apps on the domain to manage email among other things (and it's free for the standard version). It has a far superior webmail interface than any hosting solutions, it's Google so it's much more reliable (except the other day ;), it offers much more storage space and it also supports IMAP which many hosts do not support. All in all, anyone using their hosting company for their mail server is making a mistake in my judgement. :)
FTP would be very useful also for my clients who want to be able to upload files automatically (i.e., product support files). They cannot do this through a GUI interface, and ftp (or SSH) would be useful for this.

Arg! One thing I don't like about SQ is the lack of FTP capability. Are there plans to make this available in the near future? Uploading individual images when you have a bunch to do is cumbersome.
