Features + System > Discussion Forum Module vs. vBulletin/PhPbb
I'd very much like to see a response to the question (other than the SPAM) from a Squarespace developer. Unless I'm missing something big, the forum feature (at least in its default configuration) doesn't have nested categories/groups like vBulletin. Is this core module still supported/developing?
Hi Matthew,
This is definitely still in the works. There are evolutions we want to to make to this community, and when that happens we'll extend the work to the core module. We realize that everyone wants a module on par with phpbb3. It's just a question of priorities at the moment.
Thanks for your patience :)
For now my podcast site, the Dollar Bin, just links to our PHPbb forum at a sub-domain, the Dollar Bin Forums, hosted on another service (sad, I know) because we've had the forum before our move to Squarespace. I honestly prefer the Squarespace discussion module for it's simplicity, but a lot of forum users are very particular about their stats, avatar, quoting and private messaging.
I have been reading coments here and thought I would finally sign up so I could post a comment now and then.
Karen:)
A more robust message board system would really help.
Team Squarespace: Is there a timeline for if and when this might happen?
Seems like this is one of the most requested features. It would be a huge step in the right direction if you just gave forum post options similar to journal post options -- embed video and photos as the main items.
Yep, this is coming up for us too. Don't really want to get hosting from Dream host or Blue host just for vBulliten or PHPbb.
Not sure if the forum built in has enough functionality though....
Excellent site service.squarespace.com and I am really pleased to see you have what I am actually looking for here: "/features-system/post/608256/" .. as it's taken me literally 3 hours and 56 minutes of searching the web to find you (just kidding!) so I shall be pleased to become a regular visitor :)
this is the one thing keeping me from trying square space. i'll keep checking back. phpbb is a must.
IS there a way we can upload phpbb3 as a folder to the site, and make it a subdomain on our main site? I imagine we would have to have something like access to a DB to do this (the DB for our main site would do, because you can put any number of databases in one DB), but is there a way to get that sort of access?
I keep coming back to check out SquareSpace's feature set. The service appears to cater to the Blog side, with some functionality extension. I would seriously consider moving my sites if there was a robust Forum module (PHPbb preferred).
Y'all, the call to a bona fide forum solution is a must for SquareSpace. We believe in you! We know you can do it!
Since a more robust forum isn't available. When you guys do decide on getting to work on it, would it be possible to have an importing/exporting feature like the blog/journals do from forums such as vbulletins and smf? I love the service, but more detailed profiles would be awesome to have too.
I pay for the community package - $50 per mo/$600 per yr simply b/c there is no other way to obtain community features w SS. Frankly, I think the cost should be reduced - substantially reduced - until the forum option is on par with at least minimum standards of free forum solutions. It seems like there is a long way to go yet before we'll see a forum innovation that is worth paying anything for. No offense SS - the rest is great but the forum is not and the lack thereof is one sad void. JM2C

Hi everyone. I'm looking for any observations or recommendations on integrating a discussion forum withing a squarespace site.
I like having an internal discussion forum module, but to be honest, it's seems a bit light on features for what I need, which involves building a platform for a large community of users.
I'm completely ignorant of the possibilities (ie. can vBulletin or PhPbb be coded into my site, or do I have to be satisfied linking my squarespace site to an external forum site?
Can squarespace replicate, with all its different modules, something equivalent in functionality to vBulletin/PhPbb?
