Features + System > Widgets in content column?
by default, widgets go in sidebars only. there are a few workarounds though...
- make an override layout which has a really wide sidebar, basically spoofing the sidebar as the main content.
- use CSS/html to place the specific module (widget) in your page inside an HTML/text content area. you can get the CSS unique ID for any module by viewing your page source. place the widget in a hidden section in Architecture, then style it with custom CSS and place it in your page accordingly.
as for displaying content based on membership, custom audiences are , as far as i know, per-page only. but you can tell a section to only show on certain pages, and if those pages are controlled via custom audiences then it should do what you want.
hope that helps. other users might have some more techniques to add.

I would like to be able to include widgets in my content column so that I can control what text is seen by different audiences. Is there any way to do this?
As a workaround, is there a way to have members (folks who have logged in) see a different front page than the general public?
